Recognize people
This page explains how to stop getting alerts for familiar faces and how to give unknown faces a name. Plan on about two minutes per person. You need Noviscan installed (Install Noviscan on Windows), at least one camera or folder added (Add a camera or a folder), and an operator, administrator or owner account. With a viewer account you can look at the People screen but not change it.
How Noviscan recognizes someone
Noviscan recognizes a person from the faces you’ve already named. Each of those faces is kept as a face print.
Face prints are stored on the computer where Noviscan is installed.

Name a face you have already seen
When Noviscan sees a face it doesn’t know, it places it in Review until you give it a name.
- Open Review in the left-hand bar.
- Look at the face shown under the heading Who is this?. Faces are handled one at a time.
- Click the name of an existing person, or + New person.
- For a new person, type their name in Person's name.
- Leave the Whitelist box ticked, or untick it if this person should keep alerting you. It is ticked by default.
- Click Confirm.
The face leaves the queue, the next one appears, and the message Face identified: Name. is shown.
Add someone from a photo
You can also register a person from a photo.
- Open Sources in the left-hand bar.
- Find the Enroll a person section.
- Type the name in Person's name.
- Choose the photo file. Use a sharp, front-facing photo. Accepted formats are JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP and BMP, up to 15 MB.
- Click Enroll.
The message Person enrolled successfully. is shown. The person is put on the whitelist automatically. To take them off, see the next section.
The whitelist
The Whitelist is the group of people Noviscan never alerts you about. Think of the babysitter, or a relative who stops by often.
In the People screen, each person carries a badge, Whitelisted or Not whitelisted. Click it to switch from one to the other. The change applies to all the face prints under that name.

On the Free plan, the whitelist holds at most 5 people. On Premium, up to 100. Beyond that, Noviscan refuses the addition. To change plans, see Your license and subscription.
The Suspect case
File someone under 🚩 Suspect when you want to keep an eye on them: Noviscan will alert you every time it sees them.
To file a face there, click the 🚩 Suspect button, in Review, from an alert, or from a person’s record.
Fix a mistake
Is a face filed under the wrong person? Here’s how to move it.
- Open People in the left-hand bar.
- Click the tile of the person concerned.
- Under the face print to move, click Correct the assignment.
- Choose an existing name, or create one.
The panel closes, and the face print leaves the original record.
⚠️ You have to correct one face print at a time. There’s no way to rename a person in one go. When the last face print has gone, the record says No template left for this person, because the screen says “template” where this page says “face print”. The name then disappears from the list.

Groups and schedules
On the Premium plan, you can gather people in a group, then choose the hours when their presence should alert. Open Groups in the left-hand bar, then click Schedule on the group’s card. A grid of 7 days by 24 hours appears. By default everything is disarmed (Disarmed (silent)), so the group’s members never alert. Click a cell, or drag across several, to switch them to Armed (alert). Their presence will then alert at those hours. An unknown face always alerts.
On the Free plan, you can see the groups but you can’t change them.
If it does not work
- No usable face detected. The photo isn’t sharp enough, or not front-facing enough. Take a sharper one, facing the camera.
- The enrollment did not happen; the person is NOT saved. Nothing was created, so start again from the beginning.
- The whitelist badge does not switch: your plan’s limit is reached, or you are trying to put 🚩 Suspect on the whitelist, which is refused.
- You don’t see the edit buttons: your account is a viewer account. See Administer: accounts, updates, logs.
- No face is ever detected: see Fix a problem and get help.
