Add a camera or a folder

Here’s how to get Noviscan to monitor a network camera or a folder of images. It takes a few minutes.

Before you start: an Administrator or Owner account (the account created at installation is Owner); for a camera, its IP address, username and password; a plan that allows it: Free accepts 1 camera or folder, Premium accepts 8 (see Your license and subscription).

Add a camera from the catalog

The Noviscan catalog knows many models and fills in their settings for you. The site’s camera catalog also lists the models and their sheets.

<!-- IMG I2-01 : Sources and maintenance screen, Add a source button, administrator account, no source -->

  1. In the sidebar, click Sources. The Sources and maintenance screen opens.
  2. Click Add a source. The Choose a camera screen opens.
  3. Type your brand or model in the search field. The matching models appear.

<!-- IMG I2-02 : catalog, search "tapo" -->

  1. Click your model. Each model carries a label: Supported, Local stream, Cloud coming or Not integrable. If it says Not integrable, the screen explains why and the form does not open.
  2. The form opens already filled in. If the model has a Setup guide, expand it to see the steps for that model.
  3. In Camera IP address / host, enter the camera’s IP address. You can often find it in the device list of your Internet router.
  4. In Username, enter the camera’s username.
  5. In Password, enter its password.

<!-- IMG I2-03 : prefilled form, guide collapsed -->

Some models don’t have a guide yet. Their known settings stay prefilled.

Add a camera that is not in the catalog

Most network cameras send their video as a stream called RTSP. Noviscan only needs the camera’s address and the path of that stream. You never type the full address.

  1. At the bottom of the catalog, click Other source type.
  2. In Source type, choose IP camera (RTSP).
  3. In Camera IP address / host, enter the camera’s IP address.
  4. In Stream path (model-specific), enter the path given by the manufacturer. It differs from one model to another.
  5. Enter the camera’s Username and Password, each in its own field.

The RTSP port is 554 by default. Leave Transport on TCP (reliable, recommended). USB webcams aren’t in the list of source types.

Add a folder of images

The folder must be on the computer that runs Noviscan.

  1. At the bottom of the catalog, click Other source type.
  2. In Source type, choose Local folder.
  3. Next to Folder path, click Browse…
  4. Open the folder you want, then click Choose this folder.
  5. If the images are stored in subfolders, check Include subfolders.

Test, then save

Freebox: the form has no Test the connection button and ends with Add and authenticate, which you approve on the box’s screen. Ezviz and Nest: the source is saved like any other, then its card offers Authenticate. Details in Special cameras.

<!-- IMG I2-04 : Connection successful. message -->

  1. Click Test the connection. The button stays inactive while a required field is empty.
  2. The message Connection successful. appears.
  3. Click Add the source. The source appears in the Configured sources list.

<!-- IMG I2-05 : source card, green dot -->

⚠️ A Free plan accepts a single camera or folder. If you add a second one, it is refused at this last step, and the form shows: Limite de 1 source(s) atteinte pour le plan free (1/1). Passez à un plan supérieur pour en ajouter davantage. This message is always in French, whatever language the application is in. To move to Premium, see Your license and subscription.

Start monitoring and check

Adding a source doesn’t start monitoring. While it is stopped, no image is analyzed.

  1. In the sidebar, click Dashboard.
  2. Click ▶ Start. The message Monitoring active replaces Monitoring stopped.

<!-- IMG I2-06 : dashboard, ▶ Start then Monitoring active --> <!-- VID V2-01 : adding a camera through to ▶ Start -->

  1. Go back to Sources and look at the dot on your source’s card. It shows the result of the last connection test. It says nothing about monitoring itself.
    • Green, Active: the source responds.
    • Red, Inactive: the last test failed.
    • Gray, Not connected: no test has taken place yet. It’s also gray when the source is Disabled (set aside), or Internet disabled (it needs Internet: see What leaves your computer).
  2. To test right away, click the card, then Test.

If it does not work

  • The Add a source button is missing: your account is neither Administrator nor Owner.
  • The test fails on an IP camera: check the Stream path (model-specific) first, then the IP address and the credentials. The model’s guide gives the exact path.
  • No image arrives: look at the Dashboard. If Monitoring stopped is shown, click ▶ Start.
  • A camera type is grayed out in the list: it needs Internet access, which is set under Settings, tab General, section Internet access.

Going further

The types Google Nest camera (SDM), Ezviz camera (cloud clips), Freebox — camera recordings, SFTP and FTP, as well as the Alert if no media after (hours) setting, are explained in Advanced settings.
