Use Noviscan on your phone

The mobile app lets you check your alerts and name faces when you’re away from the computer that runs Noviscan. Images you view on the phone may stay there: see What stays on the phone.

Before you start: the Premium plan (pairing isn’t possible on Free); Noviscan running; an administrator or owner account; the phone on the same Wi-Fi as the computer; a computer that accepts connections from your network, see Open access from your network. Once the phone is paired, a viewer account is enough to look at alerts; to name a face, you need an operator, administrator or owner account.

Pair the phone at home

  1. On the computer, open Settings, then the Security tab, and click Pair a device. A QR code appears. It expires and can be used only once.
  2. On the phone, open the app and tap Scan pairing QR code. If the phone asks for camera access, tap Allow camera.
  3. The phone shows Confirm pairing and a list of addresses. Read the message Only pair if these addresses are indeed those of YOUR Noviscan instance. Your instance is the computer that runs Noviscan. If these are its addresses, tap Pair.
  4. The message Device paired appears.

If the QR code won’t scan, type in by hand the values the computer shows below it: the address, the Pairing secret, the certificate fingerprint, and the certificate authority. Paste the authority in full, including the BEGIN CERTIFICATE and END CERTIFICATE lines.

The four tabs

  • Dashboard: monitoring (Start monitoring, Stop monitoring), the Start a scan button when it’s stopped, and the Detections chart. Tapping a slice opens the alerts for that period.
  • Alerts: what Noviscan flagged for you.
  • Review: faces waiting for a name. Nothing here alerted you.
  • Settings: appearance, language, the lock, and access away from home.

Look at an alert

In Alerts, pick the period (Today, 7d, or All), search for a name or filter by person. Tap an alert to open it. You can then:

  • pinch the image to zoom, on iPhone and iPad. In this version, that gesture isn’t available on Android;
  • swipe left or right to reach the neighboring alert;
  • double-tap the image to play the video, if there is one;
  • press and hold the image to export it (Export image, Export video).

Zoom on face (then Scene view) and ▶ Play video need the Premium plan.

Name a face

Under an alert, the Identify block offers the same choices as Review: 🚩 Suspect, a person you already know, or a new name typed into New name (or another person), then Assign this name. If the face already has a name, the block is called Correct person.

In Review, Decide later sets the face aside (Review the undecided brings it back) and Skip → puts it at the end of the queue. Under an alert, the first is called Undecided. See Recognize people.

Away from home

By default, the phone reaches your Noviscan only on the same network. To connect from outside, first allow it on the computer: in Settings, on the Advanced tab, check Enable roaming (remote access via the relay), then restart Noviscan. Internet access must also be checked on the General tab. Without it, a phone that isn’t on your network can’t be paired.

On the phone, open Settings next and turn on Access outside the local network. The connection goes through Secufor’s connection service, which is encrypted.

Lock the app

In Settings, under Security, turn on Biometric unlock. The phone will then ask for your face or fingerprint when the app opens.

Log out or unpair

Log out ends your session on all your devices. The phone stays paired: you sign in again with your password.

Unpair this device makes the phone forget your Noviscan. The app first tells the computer, for a few seconds at most, to remove the device from its list and free one of the ten places the Premium plan allows (sessions open in a browser take some too). If the computer doesn’t answer, the phone forgets the connection anyway, but the device stays on the list. Then revoke it from the computer, as for a lost or stolen phone.

Lost or stolen phone

Revoke the phone from the computer, with an administrator or owner account: Settings, Security tab, Active connections section. In the Active sessions table, find the phone’s row and click Revoke. It can no longer reach your Noviscan and its place is freed. If you think someone knows your password, change it on the same tab, under Password.

What stays on the phone

⚠️ The images and videos you look at may stay in the phone’s cache. The app doesn’t encrypt them there and sets no time limit: the phone decides when to empty it. An image deleted on the computer can therefore stay on the phone for a while.

If pairing fails

What you see What to check
Instance unreachable — check the address and that the phone is on the same network. Is the phone on the same Wi-Fi as the computer? A “guest” network is a different network.
Unrecognized QR code (not a Noviscan pairing QR). You scanned a different QR code. The right one comes from Settings, Security tab.
This instance cannot be paired remotely (identity or certificate authority missing from the QR code). Pair on site first, at home.
